Joan Alcorn
Senior Associate – Africa
Joan Alcorn has consulted in the casino, tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors since 1983. She began her career with leading international travel company Rennies Travel after earning a National Diploma in Travel & Tourism as well as the three IATA certifications, including the Advanced IATA certification.
Early in 2006, Alcorn was invited to serve on a panel of Failte Ireland West Region (Tourism Ireland) to work on a white paper for the development of an integrated casino resort on the rural North-West Coast of Ireland to boost the tourism and rural infrastructure.
Alcorn has successfully marketed and was part of the opening and development teams of many casinos, integrated resorts and other leisure developments across Africa, the Caribbean and Europe. This has led her to provide numerous companies with professional research and feasibility studies for the development of casinos (land and internet-based) and other gaming-related business.
In Africa, Alcorn has driven and managed change as a consultant for several casino companies based in Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Swaziland and South Africa by developing and implementing casino procedures and ensuring compliance. During her time in Uganda she was part of the team that provided the initial draft for the law reform for gaming in Uganda.
Alcorn is a 1993 graduate of the University of South Africa (UNISA) with an MBA degree majoring in International Marketing.
